Sister Cities Day

Sister Cities Day has been organized by the Foreign Relations Department of the City of Brno regularly since 2022. Its objective is to connect our sister cities and provide a platform for finding solutions to topical issues. The result is a network of experts and institutions from various cities, the sharing of good practice, and also new trends and possible sources of inspiration.

Sister Cities Day 2024

The main topic of 2024 was culture.

Working groups and involved organizations:

  1. Creative industries – how we support them – Strategic Development and Cooperation Department of the City of Brno
  2. Participation of citizens in the culture and cultural strategy of the city – Cultural Department of the City of Brno
  3. Cooperation of the city with cultural events and work on branding of the city within events – Tourist Information Centre of Brno

There were 29 participants from 11 sister cities: Bratislava, Debrecen, Kaunas, Kharkiv, Leipzig, Lviv, Poznan, Rennes, St. Pölten, Stuttgart, Vienna.

Sister Cities Day 2023

The main topic in 2023 was environment.

Working groups and involved organizations:

  1. Climate change communication strategy – Environmental Department of the City of Brno
  2. Biodiversity support and greenery nature-based maintenance – Environmental Department of the City of Brno
  3. Green infrastructure engineering as a tool for the city’s adaptation – Brno University of Technology
  4. Transformation of urban energy and mobility, new challenges – Heating Company Brno

45 participants from 12 sister cities registered: Bratislava, Daejeon, Debrecen, Kaunas, Kharkiv, Leeds, Leipzig, Lviv, Poznan, St. Pölten, Stuttgart, Vienna.

Sister Cities Day 2022

In 2022, the main topic was science, especially in relation to the 200th anniversary of the birth of the founder of genetics, Johann Gregor Mendel, who was active in Brno for most of his life. Apart from that, the City of Brno has been profiled as a city of science, research, and innovation for a long time and places great emphasis on this area.

Working groups and involved organizations:

  1. How to engage children in science and technology – Observatory and Planetarium Brno
  2. Open data and data analyses for city needs – Participation Department of the City of Brno
  3. Brno as a living lab – Strategic Development and Cooperation Department of the City of Brno
  4. Teaching interdisciplinary specializations and materials science and technology at technical universities – Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Brno University of Technology
  5. Young Voices in Architectural Education – Faculty of Architecture of Brno University of Technology
  6. Ecosystem Services as a Tool for Sustainable Urban Development in Times of Global Climate Change – Faculty of Regional Development and International Studies of Mendel University in Brno

32 participants from 10 sister cities registered: Bratislava, Daejeon, Debrecen, Kaunas, Leeds, Poznan, St. Pölten, Stuttgart, Taoyuan, Vienna.
